Category: Founder

2002 Hall of Honor Inductee: David K. Peters

DAVID PETERS is a name and a personality that is synonymous with both Kiwanis and music in not only this city, but the province; and, indeed, also the country of not only Canada, but also the United States.

David was attending the School of Dentistry in Nova Scotia when he first became aware of the organization known as Kiwanis International, and of the Kiwanis involvement with Music Festivals. He became convinced that if he ever had the opportunity, he would get involved with Kiwanis,

and try to develop the idea of a Music festival in his native province of Newfoundland.

In 1951, shortly after his return home as a young dentist, he joined the Kiwanis Club of St. John's, which was, itself, in its early stages of development, coming into existence only the previous year. Later that same year, 1951, the Kiwanis Club formed the Music Festival Association of Newfoundland, and David became the first Secretary, because, he says, they couldn't get anyone else to do it. And so began a love story which has now lasted for 51 years!!!!

From founding Secretary, David went on to serve as President of the Music Festival Association on four separate occasions: 1953, 1954, 1960, and 1961. No other President has matched that record, although two have come close. In addition to his long tenure as the Association's President, he has served an untold number of years as a member of the Festival's Board of Directors and as a Committee Chairperson. He continues to the present time to be utilized as a consultant by Festival Presidents and Board members. Indeed, he contributed in no small way to the work of the committee that planned, organized, and laid all the ground-work for the institution of the HALL OF HONOUR, which we are show-casing tonight.

To return to a point which was made at the beginning of this citation, David's interest in, and support of, Kiwanis, was not limited to the Music Festival. He continued to be an active Kiwanian at the Club level, serving as President in 1970. Then, in 1976, be became the Kiwanis Lt. Gov. for Caribou Division 21, i.e., Newfoundland. In 1981 he served as only the second Newfoundland Kiwanian to be the Governor for the Eastern Canada & Caribbean District of Kiwanis International, rubbing shoulders with other District Governors from around the world. In all these positions of influence he continued to extol the virtues and advantages to Kiwanis of Music Festivals.

Throughout the 51-year history of the Kiwanis Music festival in this city, David has continued to provide very active personal and financial support. He has established a scholarship in memory of his late wife, Dorothy, which is awarded each year to a vocal duet or trio, 14 years of age or older. He has also participated as both competitor in the position of choral director, and as an accompanist. Indeed, his whole family has a history of participation in the Kiwanis Music Festival. A few years ago he even volunteered to direct a small group of Kiwanians who "performed" as a Kiwanis Choir.

In the most recent Kiwanis Music Festival, David continued his support as both a Platform Marshall or Usher at least once every day during the 10 days that the Festival operated. On a number of occasions he was the proud accompanist for his two grand- daughters as they competed in their vocal classes. The association of the Peters' family with the Music Festival is now in its third generation.

For his untiring efforts, devotion, and interest; on-going since 1951, the Kiwanis Music Festival Association of St. John's is pleased to induct DR. DAVID K. PETERS into its HALL OF HONOUR in the FOUNDER CATEGORY.
