2005 Inductees: FRED NOSEWORTHY
Category: Builder
For Fred Noseworthy, The Kiwanis Music Festival has been, and continues to be, a "labour of love".
|
For many years Fred has tirelessly volunteered his time in all aspects of Kiwanis, the Kiwanis Music Festival, and the community. His association with Kiwanis goes back a number of years, starting with the Kiwanis Club in Grand Falls. On returning to St .John's in 1968 Fred continued with his service to the community, volunteering his talents and expertise in helping build, not only a better, stronger community, but focusing as well on the growth of our youth through their association with the Kiwanis Music Festival.

Let us share with you some of Fred's involvement with Kiwanis and the Kiwanis Music Festival, in particular:
• He was a founding/charter member and Treasurer of The Kiwanis Club of Grenfell when it was formed in 1988. He has also been Club President three times.
• He has served on the Board of Directors of the Kiwanis Music Festival Association of St. John's for the past 16 years, serving as President in 1993, 1996 and 2000.
• He has Chaired or Co-chaired the Festival's Patrons/Advertising Committee for many years.
• He has served on the Festival Rules Committee and has provided input into the Rules and Regulations Section of the Syllabus.
• He provided assistance to Dr. David Peters in collecting information for the Music Festival's 50th anniversary publication.
• He actively participates in the process of selecting appropriate Adjudicators each year.
• Each year Fred ensures that trophies are engraved and ready for presentation. He ensures that the Adjudicators have the appropriate work space for their functions while adjudicating at the Arts and Culture Centre and the MUN School of Music. Fred personally made the desks that they use and that fit in at the center of the seating arrangements at these locations
• Staff at the Festival Office indicate that "Fred is the one they turn to for information, input and guidance". He is appreciated for his tremendous help, and according to them "Nothing is too much trouble!" He is the unofficial "mentor" who staff and volunteers turn to when they need direction and information.
Fred indicated in an interview he did with The Telegram a few years ago, that he had regrets that he "never took up music seriously", but he is a "die-hard fan" of music and takes a great personal satisfaction in watching and listening to the young musicians who participate in the annual Music Festival. He has great admiration and respect for all these young people and for the depth and scope of their talent. While he may have regrets that he never studied an instrument himself, his personal regrets have been swept aside by what he gets out of being a part of each Music Festival.
Although not formally trained in music, Fred has a tremendous understanding and appreciation for music. For a number of years he was a member of the Cochrane Street United Church Choir and the St. John's Glee Club under the direction of Eleanor Jerrett.
Fred is still quite active and his hobbies include golf, tennis, woodworking, and photography. He is also a member of the St. John's Philatelic Society.
Fred's personal feeling is that the Kiwanis Music Festival is the greatest community effort we could possibly have. Since his involvement with the Festival he has seen thousands of young people as an integral part of an organization that has given them a chance to develop their talents and self confidence. While it may be the musical talents of the participants that gives the Festival its reason for being, it is the work and input of people like Fred who volunteer their time and make the Festival a reality. He has a passion for the work and output of the Music Festival that is unmatched by many of us who are also involved. In addition to Fred's input as a "builder" he has given of himself as co- ordinator, platform marshal and in numerous other roles throughout each yearly Music Festival. He has never lost sight of what the Festival represents for "our children - our future". He has been a builder in the true sense of the word, and the Association in which he continues to be an integral part, is proud to induct Fred Noseworthy into its Hall of Honour in the Builder Category.
