Andreas Barban - 2002 Hall of Honor Inductee. Artist credit: Robin Cook (portrait by Robin Cook)

The name of DR. ANDREAS BARBAN was, for many years, synonymous with music, and the development of music in the city of St. John's. Those of you whose memories go back more than a few years will remember him as the first conductor of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, when that orchestra was in its infancy. You will also remember his many local radio and, later, television appearances, as a pianist of excellence. As a result of his musical prowess, Dr. Barban was, at one time, invited to be a conductor of the National Youth Orchestra.

Dr. Barban was first and foremost a teacher. He was involved with both soloists and groups, adults and children. Regular Festival-goers of years gone by will remember his familiar figure seated at the keyboard as an accompanist for vocal classes. It was not unusual for him to be called upon at a moment's notice to accompany a soloist without any rehearsal at all! His skill, fine musical ear, and sensitivity were not lost on adjudicators, and he was occasionally singled out by them for his great contribution to a vocalist's performance. His devotion to music in the community generally, and to the Kiwanis Music Festival in particular is vividly remembered and appreciated. Dr. Barban was involved with the Festival from a very early date. Because of his knowledge and expertise, he was sought out for his advice on choosing music selections for the Syllabus, and in particular, he was significantly involved in creating the Syllabus Piano section.

His son, Gregory, continued the tradition of Festival involvement begun by his father, by competing in several Festivals and winning numerous awards for his piano-playing skills.

Many of the music teachers and performers of today were former students of Dr. Barban. He was actively involved and genuinely interested in the Kiwanis Music Festival until his death in 1993, and he has left a legacy that will long be remembered.

Tonight the Kiwanis Music Festival Association of St. John's is very pleased to induct into the newly created HALL OF HONOUR, the name of DR. ANDREAS BARBAN in the MUSIC CATEGORY.
